LTO-specifikationerne er et åbent format, designet til interoperabilitet mellem flere konkurrerende leverandører. Disse leverandører indsender deres produkter til kompatibilitetstest for at sikre leverandørfunktionalitet, så en LTO-teknologi fra én leverandør kan bruges på et drev leveret af en anden. Det er blevet de facto-standard for behov inden for mellemlagsopbevaring.
