LTO-specifikationer er et åbent format, designet til interoperabilitet mellem flere konkurrerende leverandører. Disse leverandører indsender deres produkter til kompatibilitetstestning for at sikre leverandørfunktionalitet, så LTO-teknologi fra én leverandør kan bruges på et drev leveret af en anden. Det er blevet de facto-standard for behov inden for mellemlagring.
